The Hi-Lo System: Blackjack Card Counting, Taught Straight
The card values, the running count, and the silent countdown — the standard counting system, without the mystique.
The Hi-Lo system is the standard card counting method in blackjack. Low cards count plus one, middle cards count zero, and tens and aces count minus one. You keep a single running total, convert it for the decks left to be dealt, and raise your bet when the result is high.
Why Hi-Lo
Hi-Lo is the standard for a reason: it captures most of the edge available to any counting system while staying simple enough to run for hours without errors. Fancier systems exist, with more levels and side counts. Their extra edge is small; their extra error rate, for most humans at real speed, is not. This course teaches Hi-Lo and means it.
The values, again, because they are everything
2, 3, 4, 5, 6 — count +1 as they leave. 7, 8, 9 — nothing. 10, jack, queen, king, ace — count −1. The running count starts at zero when the shuffle ends and moves with every card you see, every hand, every player, the dealer included. You are not counting your cards; you are counting the table.
The silent countdown
Speed comes from two habits. First, cancellation: a +1 and a −1 land together and you say nothing — a ten beside a five is silence, not two operations. Pairs cancel constantly, and seeing that instantly is most of the speed. Second, silence itself: you do not mouth the numbers, you do not nod, you hold one number in your head and update it. The count is a hum, not a recitation.
A full deck counted correctly ends at exactly zero. That is the self-test: if you end anywhere else, you dropped something, and the deck will not lie about it.

Why the tags are what they are
The three groups are not arbitrary and they are not a mnemonic. They follow the effect each rank has on the player's expectation when it is removed from the shoe. Low cards leaving helps the player, so they count plus. High cards leaving hurts the player, so they count minus. The middle ranks pull weakly and in inconsistent directions, so they are treated as neutral rather than given a fraction that would be impossible to add at speed.
The system is balanced: count down a full deck card by card and you finish at zero. That property is what makes conversion possible later, and it is also the cheapest way to check your own accuracy. A deck that does not end on zero means an error happened, and you will know it before it costs you anything.
Cancelling, and the habit that makes speed possible
Nobody fast is adding tags one at a time. They are cancelling: a high card and a low card arriving together are seen as a pair that nets to nothing, and the eye learns to sweep a table taking out pairs before it counts what is left. A layout that looks like eight separate additions is usually two or three after cancellation.
This is a trained reflex rather than a technique to think about, which is why drilling matters more than reading here. The goal is not to add faster. It is to stop adding — to see a settled table as a single net figure rather than as a column of arithmetic waiting to be worked through.
Why it survived when better systems exist
More powerful systems are not a secret and never have been. Multi-level counts assign larger values to some ranks and track aces separately, and on paper they extract more from the same shoe. They have been available for decades and most serious players still do not use them.
The reason is that the extra power is small and the extra cost is not. A count with more values to add, a side count to maintain, and a second conversion to perform is a count with more places to slip — and slips do not average out politely. An error that inverts a bet at a rich moment costs more than the refinement was ever going to recover across the same session.
What actually separates players at this game is not which system they run. It is whether they run it accurately for hours, choose games worth playing, and size bets from a bankroll they have honestly assessed. A plainer count executed properly beats a sharper one executed nearly properly, and it is not close.
What the system does not do
It does not tell you what the next card is, and no counting system does. It does not tell you when to leave a table, which is a separate judgement about attention rather than about cards. It does not make a bad game good — a shoe cut short, or a table paying less on a natural, can eat the entire advantage the count is working to build, and no amount of accurate counting recovers it.
Understanding those limits is not a caveat attached to the system. It is part of the system, and the people who lose money at this while counting correctly are almost always losing it to something on that list.
